Curriculum

The pursuit of a business degree from Western Technical College is more than taking a collection of courses; it is an experience that teaches students not only how to think but how to apply skills that they acquire.  Classes are offered in Principles of Management, Business Ethics, Microsoft Office Applications, Payroll Accounting, Logistics, Human Resources and in other disciplines.

Certifications and Professional Badges

The associate degree in Business Administration and Management is versatile because of the variety of certifications for which a student may qualify, including:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • Payroll
  • QuickBooks
  • Bookkeeping

Additionally, students are eligible to earn digital “badges.”  A badge is a clickable online record that provides evidence of academic achievement directly from the college.  This is a portable electronic way in which to provide evidence of skills mastery.

Internships and Community Service

Internships and two days of community service strengthen students’ resumes so that they can be competitive in the job market right out of college.  A student may come into the program straight from high school or enter the program from the working world to bolster job skills.  Individuals will complete internship in a real business setting with a local company prior to graduating.  These opportunities to gain experience are consistent with Western Technical College's commitment since 1970 to serving as a College for the Real World.

Employment Opportunities

The Texas Workforce Commission reported that between December 2013 and December 2014, the professional and business services industry lead all non-agricultural Texas industries in the percentage of jobs created, with 86,000 new jobs.  That's in one year!  The number of jobs in the business administration industry in Texas is projected to increase by nearly 54 percent between 2010 and 2020. The national outlook is also rosy.  For instance, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects bookkeeping and accounting jobs in the U.S. to grow 11.4 percent to more than 2 million jobs between 2012 and 2022. Further, when Forbes ranked the 20 best jobs that do not require a bachelor's degree, first-line supervisors of administrative and support staff made the list.
