Western Technical College

Ms. Rose McDaniel, Health Information Technology Program Director explains the
significance of Western Technical College's (WTC) role in the recent graduation of the Texas
Tech employee training: She says WTC has created a special customized training program for
the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, where medical coding & billing training is provided to
employees of Texas Tech. The program is 18 months, and the main goal is to get nationally
certified as a Certified Coding Specialist-Physician which is granted from AHIMA, (American
Health Information Management Association). McDaniel says “I believe that Western Technical
College has provided customized training for approximately 3 years to them [Texas Tech
employees] not in sequence, but we have provided this assistance to Texas Tech Health Science
Center.” The most recent training session had a total of 20 students who enrolled and
successfully graduated and earned certifications.

Texas Tech selects employees from different departments from their facility and gives
them the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge. While Texas Tech pays for their
classes, students are getting the theory and real world experience through WTC's praiseworthy
training. As a testament to the program's success McDaniel comments that “I myself was one of
the first classes that took that customized training, and that is how I received my certification.”
This recent class graduated in August and the graduation was held at Texas Tech, followed by a
reception to celebrate the students’ success. As it seems, even professionals already in the field
can benefit from the training, knowledge, and experience Western Tech has to offer.

Helen Garcia, Director of Career Services at Western Tech says, “Texas Tech has
become a partner in using our Customized Training service. We were able to structure this
course according to their needs and were able to satisfy their requested date, time and place of
training, which is just one of the perks of a Customized Training plan offered to all industries.”
