Rose McDaniel, Program Director for Health Information Technology, recently assigned her students the task of writing an essay explaining and arguing their personal position on the Medical Reform Bill debate in a contest format. Students were judged not on their opinions, but on the clarity of their writing, creativity, and getting the point across.
McDaniel explains the importance of the assignment: “This project was implemented in order for our students to become informed about what is going on with today's healthcare. The American people are being faced with so many obstacles as far as the economy, unemployment, and healthcare not being accessible due financial issues. I wanted to let the students know that since they are pursuing their careers in healthcare, they need to be informed of how healthcare reform will affect their career field.”
Indeed it is crucial for students studying in the medical field to get informed in their area of study. The House has passed the “America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009;” Now, we will wait to see whether the Senate with simply pass, make changes to be re-approved by the House, or deny the Act, which aims at making health care more affordable. No matter what side of the issue you might stand on, we can all agree that it certainly doesn’t hurt to have informed health care professionals.
