Western Tech Honored for Winning State and Regional Competitions in Cyber Defense and Robotics Automation


Western Technical College (WTC) was  honored by State Senator Jose Rodriguez who presented special awards to students who recently won in the Southwest Collegiate Cyber Defense Competitions (SWCCDC) and the state level SkillsUSA competition.  

Southwest Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

WTC’s Cyber Defense team (WTSECOPS) competed in the Southwest Regional qualifier for the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) on February 27th, 2016 and was the only two year technical college of 22 four year college level teams, such as Texas A & M and New Mexico State University that competed, and one of only 4 teams who advanced to the Southwest Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (SWCCDC) finishing in 6th place in the regional qualifier.  Students that competed include Nick Sounthone, Arturo Orta, Eric Pigram, Jose Dominguez, Steven Rodriguez, Emmanuel Soto, Nicholas Horton (Team Captain), and Juan Rodriguez.

Ken Pivarnick, Program Director for WTC’s Information Systems and Security Department says, “We are very proud of our students who competed against junior and senior year students from four year colleges.” He adds, “Additionally, Western Tech’s Cyber Defense team only had four months to prepare for the competition while the other teams have been participating in the competition for the past 3 years or longer.”

State SkillsUSA Competition

WTC’s Robotics and Automation Technology team competed April 6-8 of this year, at the SkillsUSA state competition in Waco, Texas and placed in 1st and 2nd place. Edwin Melendez and Joshua McMenimen, Electronics Engineering Technology students placed 1st in State in Robotics and Automation Technology. Additionally, Leeland Lewis, Electronics Engineering Technology student placed 2nd in State in Action Skills, and Eric Pigrim, Information Systems and Security student placed 2nd in State inInformation Technology Services. Two members of the team will be competing at the National SkillsUSA competition June 20 -24in Louisville, Kentucky. This is WTC’s fourth time qualifying for the national competition in Robotics and Automation Technology, and has placed second in the National competition two times.
