Western Tech Sponsors a New Wrap for a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat at the NHRA Races, giving El Paso National Exposure

October 21, 2019

El Paso, Texas – October 21, 2019– Western Technical College has had a partnership with the Don Schumacher Racing Team (DSR) for the last 10 years.  The DSR team is a nationally recognized racing team in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). As part of the Internship Course in the Automotive Program at Western Tech, Western Tech sends students who meet the criteria out to complete their internship with the DSR team. These students can really get their hands dirty and get real world experience by being part of this program. For three weeks they travel, eat, breathe, (and if they have the time) sleep…racing with the DSR team!

Western Tech and Mopar have partnered up to draw attention to the shortage and need for trained Automotive Technicians by wrapping a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat driven by Matt Haggen’s (DSR Team Member). This beautiful funny car zoomed down the track for the 1sttime this past weekend at the NHRA races in Dallas, Texas. The Western Tech’s Mopar Funny Car sported the bright red, white, and blue Western Tech logo along with “ELPASOSTRONG” on the hood and door.

“We are very excited for this opportunity and take great pride as a locally owned college to be able to represent El Paso in the NHRA world. The reality is there’s a shortage in automotive technicians. There’s no other school who has a program or relationship like this. We hope that the partnership with Western Tech, Mopar, and DSR will pique more interest in the field and help us train and bring more technicians into an amazing industry. We are the official college of the DSR team, we are El Paso, and we want the nation to know it”, commented Brad Kuykendall- CEO Western Tech

In addition to being the only school in El Paso to have this partnership, Western Tech is also the only school that offers Mopar Cap Local Training. This factory industry training offers service technicians the opportunity to work at any FCA dealership nationwide.

“Working with a school like Western Tech has been such a rewarding experience not only for me but for my team. We get the opportunity to expose these students in the Automotive program to the racing world. These students come out with the skills needed to help my team win some races”, commented Don Schumacher – Owner DSR

Students and the El Paso community will have the opportunity to meet and hear from NHRA World Champion, Antron Brown (DSR Team Member) and see the Western Tech’s Mopar Cap Funny Car at this year’s Motorsports Day event. Motorsports Day is free and open to the public. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at the Eastside campus from 9 am-2 pm.
